PARENTS are planning a rally in protest against nursery cuts that they claim will make it harder for them to return to work.
The group will gather outside the City Chambers at noon on Saturday, ahead of an extraordinary meeting to discuss the school closures debacle.
The city council’s U-turn over the closure of 22 schools and four community centres has left officers with a budget black hole of £9 million over three years.
One cut that will go some way to helping it balance the books is the reduction of free full-time nursery places from 1054 to 700 by 2009, which is expected to save the council about £1.18 million.
The council is determined to continue to help the poorest members of society, including youngsters on the Child Protection Register, those with additional learning needs and those from poor or troubled backgrounds.

Keep up with who is trading places at the top of the legal profession
Alex Verdan, QC, is one of nine family specialists switching from 9 Gough Square to 4 Paper Buildings. All nine barristers are specialists in child law, moving 4 Paper Buildings to the forefront of the field. The other new recruits are John Tughan, Susan Baldock, James Shaw, Sally Bradley (all over 15 years call), Oliver Jones, Cleo Perry, Ceri White and Dorothea Gartland. Verdan, an expert in complex care proceedings, was called to the Bar in 1987 and became a QC last year. He is a member of the Bar Standards Board conduct committee and a trustee of the charity International Social Services.
Head of chambers at 4 Paper Buildings, Jonathan Cohen, QC, said: “These new acquisitions are a coup for chambers, and we are confident that this will reinforce our position as the leading set for children law and a force to be reckoned with in matrimonial finance.”
* Paul Rogerson, City editor of Scottish newspaper The Herald, has taken the editor’s chair at the Law Society Gazette. His appointment follows a lengthy search for an editor-in-chief after the surprise departure of longstanding editor Jonathan Ames in the spring. Rogerson edited a weekly legal section for The Herald. He has also edited a number of trade titles.
“Paul brings with him a mass of journalistic experience,” said Des Hudson, the Law Society’s chief executive. “His appointment will help to deliver services to our members more efficiently and is central to the sharper focus on supporting solicitors.” Ames, who edited the Gazette for seven years, has joined Dubai-based publishers The Media Factory.

The father of missing Madeleine McCann has described the events of the past week as an “unending nightmare”.
In his internet blog, Gerry McCann said he and his wife Kate, of Rothley, Leics, faced an “unbearable” situation.
Portuguese police have played down reports that DNA evidence with a 100% match to Madeleine was found in her parents’ hire car.
The public prosecutor has received case files from police after Madeleine’s parents were declared formal suspects.
In his blog, Mr McCann said he and his wife had absolute confidence that when all the facts were presented they would be able to show that “we played no part in Madeleine’s abduction”.
The couple, both 39, were declared formal suspects last week.
The national director of the force handling the investigation said test results did not provide the same precision as had been reported.
Alipio Ribeiro, national director of the investigative Policia Judiciaria (PJ) told Portuguese state broadcaster RTP: “We can’t say with certainty whether it was the blood of person A or person B.
“They help guide us in our investigation but not with the mathematical precision some people are saying.”
Madeleine was reported missing from the McCanns’ apartment in Praia da Luz, in the Algarve, on 3 May.
The case details are expected to be delivered on Tuesday and prosecutors will then decide whether to bring charges against the McCanns or ask for further evidence.
